Apex Tool Group is seeking a skilled and motivated Field Service Technician to join our team in Auburn Hills, Michigan. This role involves assembling, testing, troubleshooting, and servicing complex electromechanical automation equipment used in automotive manufacturing. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical and electrical aptitude, experience with automation systems, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
The Build (Responsibilities)
Service & Support:
- Provide on-site service, repair, and preventive maintenance to customers for installed automated systems.
- Diagnose and resolve mechanical and electrical failures in the field.
- Train customers on equipment operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.
- Follow safety protocols and company policies at all times.
Testing & Debugging:
- Support the commissioning of systems, including software/hardware integration and process verification.
- Perform machine testing and assist in initial debug and troubleshooting.
- Identify and report design or manufacturing issues to engineering.
Documentation & Communication:
- Maintain accurate service logs, assembly records, and documentation of issues and fixes.
- Communicate with engineering and project management teams to relay field feedback and suggest improvements.
System Build & Assembly:
- Assemble mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic components for automated assembly systems.
- Install wiring, control panels, sensors, actuators, and other automation components.
- Calibrate and align machines, fixtures, and tooling to ensure accurate operation.
The Toolbox (Qualifications)
Education & Experience:
- Associate degree or technical diploma in Mechatronics, Industrial Automation, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field preferred.
- 2+ years of hands-on experience in automation assembly, machine building, or field service.
Technical Skills:
- Strong understanding of mechanical assembly and electrical wiring (mechanical detail/assembly prints, electrical, and pneumatic schematics)
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic instruments.
- Familiarity with PLCs, HMIs, sensors, servo systems, and pneumatic components.
Other Requirements:
- Ability to travel up to 30–50% for customer support (domestic and occasional international).
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
- Self-motivated, organized, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
Working Conditions:
- Split between a shop/assembly environment and customer facilities.
- May require standing, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and working in industrial environments.
- Occasional overtime and off-hours work may be necessary during system installations or urgent service calls.
