The Blueprint (Role Profile)

Reporting to the Manager, Engineering Services, the Model Maker III is a lead position responsible for assigning and overlooking the work of others as well as creating multiple iterations of components for testing and evaluation.  This role fabricates prototypes to precise specifications in support of new product development, product improvements, cost reductions and product demos.  This includes interaction with various cross-functional teams: Industrial Design, R&D Engineering, Product Marketing personnel.

The Build (Responsibilities)

  • Have full oversight to Model Shop equipment, work load, personnel and ensure timely execution of project work. Delivering high-quality prototypes for design validation and functionality.
  • Close collaboration with project teams to ensure alignment with program schedules.
  • Work with outside vendors on complex projects and determine whether to outsource work.
  • Use and program 5 Axis CNC mill along with other various mfg equipment and processes.
  • Oversee shop equipment, capital needs, and a vision for future growth and enhancement
  • Use manual equipment including mills, lathes, wire EDM and grinding for fabricating complex prototypes, test parts and trade show demonstrations of products
  • Use of various Rapid Prototype (RP) techniques and equipment in support of prototyping requirements (such as 3D printers).
  • Utilize Microsoft Office, SMartSheet, CAD/CAM, etc for completion of daily activities
  • Perform routine maintenance and servicing of model shop equipment and machines to ensure smooth, trouble free operation
  • Maintain clean and efficient work environment using 5S
  • Working proactively with a strong sense of urgency

The Toolbox (Qualifications)

•    Associates Degree in CNC Machining, Computer Integrated Machining, or similar relevant degree
•    Experience with computer programs, including Microsoft Office, SmartSheet and CAD/CAM
•    Experience with a wire EDM machine
•    Strong knowledge of ESPRIT, HyperMILL, and CREO CAE
•    Strong of 5 axis technology, CNC programming, including G & M Codes
•    Ability to perform precise measurements on machined parts for quality control
•    Deep knowledge of common materials used for making tools and prototypes
•    Experienced in engineering drawings/models specifications, tolerancing, etc. 
•    Strong self-starter who can work with little or no supervision
•    Well organized, detail-oriented, team player capable of working in a deadline-driven environment
•    Flexible to changing priorities required for successful job completion
•    Strong attention to detail and a continuous improvement mindset is a must

Preferred Requirements
•    Experience in Tool & Die making or model making
•    Completed Tool & Die Maker apprenticeship program
•    Knowledge of various manufacturing processes and production tooling
•    Experience with 3D printers
